Chapter 12

Lisbeth wakes ahead of Mattie the following morning. She goes to the kitchen to collect water and find the ointment for Mattie's gashes. The house cook is moved by a young white girl's compassion for a black slave.

Chapter 13

Mattie feels more exhausted than usual. At first, she thinks it is because of the lashings her body has received. She eventually finds out that it is because she is pregnant once again. The other slaves help out with her work, but they all know that Mattie has to inform Mrs. Gray. Mattie is aware that once she does, she will be sent outside and away from Lisbeth.

Lisbeth is upset the Mattie has to leave. When she says that she doubts she would be able to look after herself, Mattie tells her that she is already a lady and is more than capable of doing so. Emily would also be by her side in case she needs any help. Mattie is eventually sent back outside, and Emily is left to look after Lisbeth.

On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Lisbeth would go out to visit Mattie. Together, they come up with a name for Mattie's unborn child: if the baby turns out to be a girl, she will be named Jordan, and if the baby is a boy, he will be called Jeremiah. Come November, baby Jordan is born. Mattie promises Jordan that no one will ever break them apart and that soon they will have a taste of freedom.

The Wainwrights are informed by Mrs. Gray that Mattie has given birth to a girl. Lisbeth hurries to see Mattie and Jordan. Mattie hands her daughter to Lisbeth and teaches her how to hold the baby's head properly. Lisbeth presents Mattie a quilt she has crafted. Mattie is touched by Lisbeth's gift, and they wrap the quilt around Jordan.

Throughout the winter and the spring, Lisbeth comes down to visit Jordan. Everybody finds it ironic that a white girl looks after a Negro child.
